How to set up Mode Analytics

Setup takes about 15 minutes.

Introduction

Connecting Mode Analytics to Foundational allows Foundational to scan Mode metadata, determine lineage, and identify downstream impact across reports and queries.

To make the connection, you need to:

  • Get your Mode Analytics Workspace ID
    ​

  • Create an API key
    ​

  • Connect Foundational to Mode

Prerequisites

Ensure you have:

  • Mode Analytics admin rights
    ​

  • Permissions to view Workspace settings and create Workspace API keys in Mode

Access permissions

To read metadata and build lineage, Foundational needs an API key with access to the Mode workspace. These permissions allow Foundational to:

  • Access metadata
    ​

  • List reports, queries, and collections
    ​

  • Read report structure and dependencies​

Get the Mode Analytics Workspace ID

  1. Sign in to Mode, and click the M logo to open the side menu.
    ​

  2. Click the Workspace dropdown and select Workspace settings.
    ​

  3. In Workspace settings, copy the Workspace ID from the page's URL and save it. You’ll need it to set up the connection.
    ​

    The ID is the last component in the URL. For example, if the URL is https://app.mode.com/organizations/ID1234, the Workspace ID is ID1234. Note that the ID is not your workspace name (“My Awesome Org Workspace”, in this example).
    ​

  4. Repeat these steps for each workspace.

Create an API key in Mode

  1. In WORKSPACE, select Default Settings.
    ​

  2. In Default Settings, select the API tab.
    ​
    ​IMPORTANT: If you can't find the tab, you might not have the required permissions in Mode. Contact your Mode Admin for help.

  3. Click the Gear icon, then click Create new API key.
    ​

  4. The Create new API key screen opens.​ ​

    Enter the details:
    ​

    • Display name: Enter a name, e.g., foundational_connector.
      ​

    • Key expiration: Set the key expiration period to 365 (days).

  5. Click Create.
    ​

  6. A new screen opens displaying the new API key details. Copy and save these details. You’ll need them to set up the connection.
    ​

    • API ID
      ​

    • API Key Secret. The secret only shows once!
      ​

  7. Close the Key Secret window and verify that you see the new key in the list of API keys and that the ID is correct.

You’re now ready to connect Foundational to your Mode workspaces.

Connect Foundational to Mode

Follow the steps and create an account for each workspace.

  1. In Foundational, open the Connectors & Integrations page.
    ​

  2. In BI & Analytics, select the Mode Analytics card and click Connect.
    ​

  3. A new screen opens. Click Add Account.
    ​

  4. The initial setup screen opens. Click Start Setup.
    ​

  5. The Set Up New Connection screen opens.
    ​


    Enter the details:
    ​

    • Workspace ID: The ID part of the URL you saved.
      ​

    • API-key ID: The key ID you saved.
      ​

    • API key secret: The secret you saved.
      ​

  6. Click Next.
    ​

  7. The final setup screen opens. To complete the connection, click Save.
    ​

That’s it. Foundational is now connected to Mode Analytics.
