Connect Foundational MCP to Microsoft 365 Copilot

Connect Foundational MCP to Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot connects to Foundational through an installable app package that a Microsoft 365 administrator deploys to your organization. You don't point Copilot at the MCP server URL directly. After the package is installed, a Foundational agent becomes available to users in Copilot, and each user signs in with their own Foundational account the first time they use it.

Before you begin

  • Installing the package requires a Microsoft 365 Global Administrator or AI Administrator.

  • Users of the agent need Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses.

  • Each user needs an active user account in the Foundational app.

Install the package (administrator)

  1. Download the Foundational Copilot agent package (download link)

  2. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center as a Global Administrator or AI Administrator.

  3. In the left panel, go to Agents > All agents, then click Add agent.

  4. Click Choose File and select the Foundational Copilot agent package you downloaded.

  5. Review the app's details and requested permissions, then accept them.

  6. Choose who can use the agent (the whole organization, or specific users or groups) and complete the deployment.

  7. When setup is complete, the Foundational agent is listed under Agents > All agents. The agent details may vary depending on the version you installed.

After approval, it can take a few minutes (occasionally longer) for the Foundational agent to appear for users in Copilot.

Use the Foundational agent

  1. Open Microsoft 365 Copilot and select the Foundational agent from the agent list, or @-mention Foundational in a chat.

  2. Ask a question about your data, for example: "Show me our biggest warehouse cost issues."

    • The first time the agent uses a Foundational tool, it asks you to sign in to Foundational. Click Sign in to Foundational, complete the sign-in in your browser, then continue in the Copilot chat.

    • During the first few uses, Copilot may ask you to approve specific tools provided by the Foundational MCP server. Review the tool details and click Confirm to approve.

Troubleshooting

Can't find Foundational in the Agents section

Look under Agents > More agents. If it isn't there either, contact your IT administrator to verify that the Foundational agent is installed and enabled for your user.

Authentication with Foundational fails

Sign in to the Foundational web app outside of Copilot (go to https://app.foundational.io), then try the Foundational agent in Copilot again. If you can't sign in to the Foundational web app, ask your IT or data administrator to invite you to Foundational. If it still doesn't work, contact us.

The agent can't answer data pipeline questions

Ask the agent whether it is connected to the Foundational MCP server ("Are you connected to Foundational MCP server?"). If it says no, contact your IT administrator to check the agent setup in the Microsoft 365 admin center. If it says yes and you still don't get answers, contact us.
