# Introduction

This article lists the programming languages and platforms that Foundational supports for lineage extraction. Supported platforms include ETL tools, ELT and query engines, business intelligence tools, and databases and data warehouses.

Foundational analyzes source code directly rather than parsing query logs, so lineage reflects your data stack as defined in code, including assets that have never been queried. Foundational connects to source control to access code and to your data platforms to extract schemas and metadata. It does not access data, personally identifiable information (PII), or protected health information (PHI).
